Is my cat in pain? A two-minute cat pain scale for iPhone

Cats hide pain, but their faces change. Whisker Check walks you through five facial features (ears, eyes, muzzle, whiskers and head position) and asks you to pick the closest of three drawings for each. The five features and the 0 to 2 scoring follow the facial pain scale for cats described by Evangelista and colleagues in Scientific Reports (2019). In about two minutes you get a score out of 10 and a plain-language read of what it means, from wait and watch to worth a call to your vet. Every check is saved so you can follow the trend and hand your vet a PDF. A score is a prompt, not a diagnosis: if you are worried, call your vet whatever the number says.

How to check if your cat is in pain from its face

You do the looking; the app keeps the scoring consistent and the record tidy. It takes about two minutes.

  1. Watch quietly for 30 secondsLet your cat settle, then look at its face without picking it up or waking it.
  2. Compare five featuresFor ears, eyes, muzzle, whiskers and head position, pick the closest of three drawings. The drawings use your cat's own coat and only one feature changes at a time. If a feature is hidden, mark it and the score is scaled the way the researchers do it.
  3. Read the resultYou get a score out of 10 and a plain-language read of what it means, including when it is worth calling your vet.
  4. Save, repeat and shareThe check is saved with the date, time, each feature's score, your notes and an optional photo. Repeat it to see the trend, and create a PDF report for your vet (full version).

What it does

🐱Guided face check

Five features, three drawings each, scored 0 to 2. A score out of 10 in about two minutes.

👀You look, you decide

No photo scan guessing from pixels. Lighting, a fluffy face, a kitten or a flat-faced breed does not break it.

🐾Mood read

A 30-second body-language check of tail, ears, eyes and posture.

📈History and trend

Every check saved with date, time, scores, notes and an optional photo, on a chart over days.

📄PDF vet report

A chart and a table your vet can read in a minute. Email it, AirDrop it or print it. Part of the full version.

🔔Reminders and more cats

Reminders for twice-a-day checks after surgery, and more than one cat. Part of the full version.

Questions this app answers

How can I tell if my cat is in pain?

Cats are good at hiding pain, and behavior often changes late. Their faces change earlier. Veterinary researchers have shown that five facial features (ears, eyes, muzzle, whiskers and head position) can be scored by owners who know what to look for. Whisker Check walks you through each one with drawings. If your cat is not eating, hiding, breathing fast, or you are simply worried, call your vet without waiting for a score.

What is the feline grimace scale?

It is a facial pain scale for cats described by Evangelista and colleagues in Scientific Reports (2019). Each of five features is scored 0, 1 or 2, for a total out of 10. Whisker Check follows those five features and that scoring, with its own drawings, and cites the paper in the app. It is independent and not affiliated with the researchers.

Is there an app to check if my cat is in pain?

Whisker Check is a guided version of the published scale for iPhone. It does not scan a photo: you watch your cat and pick the drawing that matches, so bad light or an unusual face does not throw it off. The result tells you whether it looks fine, worth watching, or worth a call to your vet. It is not a diagnosis.

How do I track my cat's recovery after surgery, a spay or a dental?

Check twice a day and watch the scores on a chart. Each check is saved with your notes and an optional photo, so you can see whether things are improving. Reminders (full version) help you keep to a schedule, and the PDF report gives your vet the whole record at the follow-up.

How do I notice slow changes in a senior cat or a cat with arthritis?

A weekly check builds a record over time, so a slow drift in the score shows up on the trend chart instead of relying on memory. Bring the PDF report to the next appointment.

When should I call the vet?

Whenever you are worried, whatever any score says. Whisker Check marks the range where the researchers behind the scale suggest getting a vet involved, and tells you to call your vet and share the score and what you saw. If your cat is recovering from surgery or already on pain relief, your vet will want to know the same day.

Whisker Check vs a printed scale or a photo-scan app

You can score the published scale yourself with the paper's reference images and a notebook. Whisker Check adds guided drawings, a saved history and a vet report. Some other apps estimate pain from a photo instead of asking you to look.

Frequently asked questions

Is Whisker Check free?

Yes. Face checks, mood reads and the last 7 days of history are free, forever. A single one-time purchase ($4.99 in the US) unlocks the PDF vet report, full history, multiple cats and reminders, and removes the ads. There is no subscription and nothing to cancel.

Does it diagnose my cat?

No. Whisker Check does not diagnose or treat any condition. A score is a prompt, not a diagnosis. If you are worried about your cat, or it is not eating, hiding or breathing fast, call your vet whatever the number says.

What research is it based on?

The five features (ears, eyes, muzzle, whiskers and head position) and the 0 to 2 scoring follow the facial pain scale for cats described by Evangelista and colleagues in Scientific Reports (2019). The full citation is in the app. Whisker Check is independent and not affiliated with the researchers.

Does it work for kittens, long-haired or flat-faced cats?

Yes. There is no photo scan, so a fluffy face, a kitten or a flat-faced breed does not break it: you are the one looking. If a feature is hidden, mark it and the score is scaled the same way the researchers do it.

How do I send the report to my vet?

Open Vet report, pick the period, then share the PDF by email or AirDrop, or print it for the appointment. The report has a chart and a table of each check. It is part of the one-time unlock.

Is my data private?

There is no account and no sign-up. Your cats, checks, notes and photos stay on your iPhone. The free version shows a small, non-personalized banner ad on the home, history and settings screens, never during a check. The unlock removes it.

Which languages does it support?

15: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, including the vet report.

Is there an Android version?

There is no Android version yet. Whisker Check is iPhone-only.
