How to Print a WhatsApp Chat on Android: Export It, Turn It Into a Paginated PDF With Dates and Times, and Print From Your Phone or a Computer

You cannot print a WhatsApp chat directly on Android. The clean route: Export chat (without media) to a .txt, open it in Chat Export Studio to get a paginated PDF with sender, date and time on every message, then print from the share sheet, a printer app or a computer. Limits, tips and what to check before you print.

Sooner or later someone asks for a WhatsApp conversation on paper: a lawyer, an accountant, a landlord, a school, or a relative who simply wants the family chat from the year of the wedding in a binder. On Android there is no Print option anywhere in WhatsApp, and the obvious workaround, screenshots, falls apart after the third page: no dates, no page numbers, half a message cut off at every edge. This guide is the clean route: export the chat, turn the export into a proper paginated PDF, and print that.

Short version: in the chat tap the three dots, More, Export chat, Without media, and send the .txt to Chat Export Studio: PDF. Tap Export styled PDF, then print the PDF from the Android share sheet or from a computer. The rest of the post is the detail, including the export limits, how to make the printout useful, and the privacy angle.

Why screenshots are the wrong tool for printing

  • A screenshot shows the time of each message but not the date; the date header scrolls away and you lose it on every page after the first.
  • Messages get cut at the top and bottom of every capture, so long conversations become a jigsaw.
  • Fifty screenshots are fifty images; printing them is slow, the text is small, and nobody can search them.
  • A screenshot is easy to fake and easy to accuse of being faked. A conversation printed from the chat's own export file, kept next to that file, is a more straightforward record.

The export file, by contrast, contains every message with its full date and time stamp, in order, as plain text. It is just unreadable as it is, and that is what the PDF step fixes.

Step 1: export the chat from WhatsApp on Android

  • Open the chat you want to print. It can be a one-to-one chat or a group.
  • Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then More, then Export chat. On some Samsung phones the entry sits under a Settings item instead of More.
  • Choose Without media. Media is not needed for a printout, and a without-media export covers far more of the conversation: WhatsApp limits an export to the most recent messages, roughly 40,000 without media and only about 10,000 if media is included.
  • The Android share sheet opens. Pick Chat Export Studio directly, or save the file to Files or Google Drive first if you prefer to keep a copy of the raw export, which for anything official you should.

The result is a .txt file, sometimes inside a .zip, named after the chat. Open it in any text app and you will see why nobody prints it as-is: one dense line per message, bracketed timestamps, no spacing, and system notices mixed in with the conversation.

Step 2: turn the export into a paginated PDF

Chat Export Studio: PDF reads the .txt or .zip export from either Android or iPhone, in 12-hour or 24-hour time, and lays it out the way the chat looked on screen. Every message becomes its own bubble with the sender, date and time; one-to-one chats are set out left and right, and group chats get a colour per participant. Encryption notices, joins, leaves and the "media omitted" markers from a without-media export are rendered as small pills rather than clutter. Pages break between messages, never through one, which is the single most important thing for a printout.

Open the export in the app (share it from WhatsApp, or tap Open exported chat and pick it from Files), glance at the statistics screen that appears first, then tap Export styled PDF. The PDF is generated on the phone and the share sheet opens. Everything happens on the device; the app parses the chat locally, needs no account and works offline, so a confidential conversation is not uploaded to anyone's server on the way to the printer. It is a one-time purchase with no subscription.

If you want to check the file before printing, save the PDF to Files and open it in your PDF viewer. Scroll to the first and last page and confirm the date range matches what you expected; an export only contains messages from the point you joined a group, and a chat you once cleared starts from the clearing, not from the beginning of the relationship.

Step 3: print the PDF

From the phone. In the share sheet, choose Print, or open the PDF in Files or Google Drive and use the Print option in its menu. Android's print framework finds Wi-Fi printers and printers shared through a manufacturer's print service; if your printer does not appear, install its print service plug-in from the Play Store and try again. Choose double-sided if the printer supports it; a long chat is a lot of paper.

From a computer. For anything long or anything that needs to look tidy, move the PDF to a computer: email it to yourself, put it in Google Drive, or use Nearby Share or a USB cable. Print from a desktop PDF viewer, where you can set page ranges, scale, margins and a page-number stamp if your viewer offers one. Printing a 300-page group chat is also where you discover that selecting a date range matters, which is why step 2's check is worth the minute.

At a print shop. Take the PDF on a USB stick, or email it to the shop. Hand over the PDF rather than the .txt; the PDF prints the same everywhere, while a text file prints differently on every machine.

Making the printout useful

  • Print the statistics page too, or note them on the cover. The app shows the date range, total messages, messages per participant and media count; a cover sheet with that summary helps whoever reads the binder.
  • Keep the original export. Store the .txt or .zip next to the PDF, unmodified. If anyone later questions the printout, the raw export is the thing to show them.
  • Name the file properly. "Chat with Landlord 2025-03 to 2026-10.pdf" beats "WhatsApp Chat with John.pdf" once there are three of them.
  • Mind other people's privacy. A group export contains everyone's messages and, for people not in your contacts, their phone numbers. Print only what the situation needs, and do not leave the printout on a shared printer.
  • Check what the requester actually wants. Some organisations want a PDF by email, not paper; some want the raw export as well. Ask before you print 200 pages.

Limits and honest caveats

The export is a text record: photos, voice notes and videos appear as "media omitted" markers in the PDF, matching a without-media export, so if a particular image matters, save it separately and reference it by date and time. Very long chats take longer to turn into a PDF, although the statistics appear almost instantly. And whether a printed chat is accepted as a record is a question for the organisation or jurisdiction involved, not for an app: the app makes the document, you keep the original export, and the person asking tells you what format they need.

If you are not sure what the Export chat option does before you tap it, the earlier post on what export chat means in WhatsApp on Android explains what is and is not included and whether the other person is told; and for records headed to an HR department, landlord or insurer, see saving a WhatsApp chat as a PDF on Android. Chat Export Studio is also available for iPhone; the Android version is the one described here.
