What Does "Export Chat" Mean in WhatsApp on Android? What It Includes, What It Leaves Out, and How to Turn It Into a PDF
"Export chat" in WhatsApp on Android saves a copy of a conversation as a text file. What is in the file, what is not, whether the other person is told, the message limits, and how to turn the export into a readable PDF.
Open a WhatsApp chat on Android, tap the three dots, tap More, and there it is: Export chat. Plenty of people see that option and wonder what it does. Does it send the conversation somewhere? Does the other person find out? Is it the same as a backup? The questions arrive in every language, and the honest answer is that WhatsApp's own wording does not explain much. This post does: what Export chat means, exactly what ends up in the file, what is missing from it, and how to turn the raw export into a PDF you can actually read, using Chat Export Studio on Android.
Export chat, in one sentence
Export chat makes a copy of one conversation as a plain text file, and hands that file to you through Android's share sheet so you can save it, email it or open it in another app. It does not change the chat, it does not delete anything, and it does not send anything to the other person. Think of it as printing the conversation to a file rather than to paper.
It is not a backup. A WhatsApp backup saves all your chats to Google Drive in a format only WhatsApp can restore. Export chat saves one conversation in a format anything can open, which is exactly why it is useful for keeping a record, handing a copy to someone, or reading an old conversation without WhatsApp.
What is in the export
The export is a text file, usually named along the lines of WhatsApp Chat with <name>.txt, delivered on its own or inside a .zip. Each message is one line: the date, the time, the sender's name as saved in your contacts (or their number if not saved), and the message text. System events appear as lines too: when the chat was created, when someone joined or left a group, the encryption notice, and when a message was deleted. Media is where the choice you made matters.
- Without media: photos, videos, voice notes, stickers and documents appear only as placeholders such as
<Media omitted>. The file is tiny and the export is quick. This is the option to use for a record of what was said. - Include media: the attachments are added alongside the text file in a .zip. The export is much larger, can take a while, and WhatsApp includes media only for the most recent part of a long chat.
On the limits, the commonly cited figures are up to 40,000 messages without media and up to 10,000 with media; older messages beyond those limits are simply not included, and WhatsApp does not warn you when a chat is longer than that. If you need a very long group history, export without media. Timestamps follow your phone's clock setting, 12-hour or 24-hour, which matters later when another app has to parse the file.
What is not in the export
- Calls. Voice and video call history is not part of a chat export.
- Disappearing messages that have already disappeared, and view-once photos or videos. If it is gone from the chat, it is gone from the export.
- Messages deleted for everyone appear only as a "This message was deleted" line, not with their original text.
- Reactions and some formatting may be lost or appear as plain characters, depending on the WhatsApp version.
- Anything from a phone you no longer have. Export works on the chat as it exists on this device.
Does the other person know?
No. Exporting a chat is a local action on your phone. The other participant, or the group, gets no notification and sees no change. The flip side is also true: anyone you share a chat with can export it, which is worth remembering before you write anything in a group you would not want on paper.
One regional note. In Germany, WhatsApp removed the Export chat option from the app some years ago, and users there still do not see it in the menu. If you are in Germany and cannot find the option, that is why, not a setting you have missed.
Step by step on Android
- Open the chat or group you want to export.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then tap More, then Export chat. On some Samsung and Xiaomi phones the menu wording differs slightly, but the option is in the same place.
- Choose Without media or Include media. For a readable record, choose Without media.
- Android's share sheet opens. Pick where the file should go: Save to Drive, Files, Gmail, or directly into an app that can open it. If Chat Export Studio is installed, it appears in the share sheet and you can send the export straight to it.
If you saved the file instead of sharing it directly, open the Files app, find the .txt or .zip, tap it and choose Chat Export Studio, or open the app and use its own file picker to load the export.
Turning the export into a PDF you can read
The raw export is one long wall of text, and a 2,000-message group chat is almost impossible to follow in it. Chat Export Studio opens the .txt or the .zip, from an Android or an iPhone export and in 12-hour or 24-hour time, and lays it out the way the chat looked on screen: one bubble per message with sender, date and time, one-to-one chats left and right, group chats with a colour per participant. System notices and media placeholders are shown as small pills instead of clutter, and pages break between messages rather than through them, so a printout stays readable.
The moment the file opens you also get statistics: total messages and words, messages per participant as counts and percentages, the busiest hour of the day, the date range, the media count and the most-used emoji. Tap Export styled PDF, and the PDF is generated on the phone and handed to Android's share sheet, ready to save to Drive or Files, email, or print. There is a built-in sample chat if you want to try the flow before exporting one of your own.
Everything happens on the device. There is no account and no sign-up, nothing is uploaded, it works in airplane mode, and the Play listing describes it as free to install with ads and a one-time purchase, with no subscription. For a conversation you are exporting precisely because it is sensitive, that matters more than any feature; our earlier post on saving a WhatsApp chat as a PDF for HR, a landlord or an insurer goes into when a PDF record is useful and what it can and cannot prove.
Quick answers
- Export chat meaning: save a copy of one WhatsApp conversation as a text file you can keep or share.
- Is it safe? Yes for the chat itself; nothing is changed or deleted. Be careful where you send the file afterwards, because it contains the whole conversation.
- Does it include photos? Only if you choose Include media, and then only for the more recent part of a long chat.
- Can I export a group chat? Yes, the same way; the file lists every participant's messages.
- Can I undo it? There is nothing to undo on the chat side. Delete the exported file if you no longer want the copy.
- Why can I not find Export chat? Check under the three dots, then More. If you are in Germany, the option is not available in WhatsApp.
