Make Your Own 'WhatsApp Wrapped': A Year-in-Review of One Chat on iPhone, With Statistics That Never Leave Your Phone

A private WhatsApp Wrapped for one chat on iPhone: export it, read the statistics in Chat Export Studio: PDF, write your year-in-review lines. Nothing uploaded.

Every December the year-in-review posts arrive: who sent the most messages, what time the group chat really comes alive, which emoji got used until it lost all meaning. Most 'WhatsApp Wrapped' guides get those numbers by uploading your exported chat to a website, which means a year of private conversation on someone else's server in exchange for a graphic. This is the version that does not do that.

Chat Export Studio: PDF is a $4.99 one-time iPhone app that opens the file WhatsApp's Export Chat produces and computes whatsapp statistics for that chat on the phone itself: totals, messages per person, busiest hour, top emoji. This post covers getting the numbers, what each one tells you, and six Wrapped-style lines you can write by hand from them. It is published in November on purpose: yours will be done before everyone else starts.

Why a private Wrapped instead of a whatsapp chat analyzer website

A WhatsApp export is the whole conversation in plain text: every message, every name, every timestamp. A web-based whatsapp chat analyzer needs that file uploaded, and once it has left your phone you are trusting a stranger's retention policy with your best friend's medical news. The numbers are fun; the raw material is not something to hand over for a bar chart.

Chat Export Studio parses the file and generates the PDF entirely on the device. It works in airplane mode, has no account and no analytics, and its App Store privacy label reads Data Not Collected.

Step by step: export the chat, open it, read the stats card

  • Export the chat from WhatsApp. Open the chat, tap the contact or group name at the top, choose Export Chat, then Without Media. WhatsApp produces a .txt file (sometimes inside a .zip) and shows the share sheet.
  • Send it to the app. In the share sheet pick Copy to Chat Export. The app reads both iPhone and Android export formats, in 12-hour or 24-hour time.
  • Read the statistics. They are computed the moment the file opens: total messages and words, messages per participant as counts and percentages, busiest hour of the day, date range, media count and most-used emoji. That card is your raw Wrapped.
  • Keep the PDF if you like. The same open produces a styled, paginated PDF, one bubble per message with sender, date and time. Not needed for a Wrapped, but a nice keepsake.

To see the card before exporting anything real, open the built-in sample chat first.

The honest catch: the numbers cover the whole export, not just this year

Chat Export Studio has no date filter. Whatever range is in the file is the range the statistics cover, and on iPhone WhatsApp exports the full chat history. If the chat with your sister started in 2021, the card describes five years, not one. A true '2026 only' review is only exact when the chat itself began in 2026.

Two ways to handle that. The easy one: present the numbers as 'since the chat began', which is a better Wrapped line anyway; the date range on the card tells you how long that is. The fiddly one: open the exported .txt in a text editor before importing it. Every line starts with its date, so find the first line from January 2026, delete everything above it, save, and open the trimmed file in the app. It takes a few careful minutes on a long chat, and it still happens entirely on your own devices.

What the app does not offer: per-month breakdowns, charts, streaks or a 'most active day'. The card shows the figures listed above and nothing else.

What each number tells you

  • Messages per participant, as counts and percentages. Who carries the conversation, and by how much. In a couple's chat this settles 'who texts more' with data; in a group it names the engine and the lurkers.
  • Busiest hour of the day. The chat's prime time. A group that peaks at 23:00 is a different group from one that peaks on the 08:00 commute.
  • Total words against total messages. Divide one by the other for the average message length, and you can usually tell who sends essays and who sends one-liners.
  • Most-used emoji. The chat's mascot. Nobody chooses this consciously, which is why it is the most revealing number on the card.
  • Media count. Photos, videos, voice notes and stickers. A Without Media export marks them as 'N media files omitted' in the PDF, but they are still counted.
  • Date range. First and last message in the file: the 'since' in every line you write, and the number that keeps you honest.

Turning the stats into a Wrapped: six lines you can write by hand

The app gives you numbers, not graphics. A screenshot of a note shares just as well as a generated image. These are templates with placeholder figures; put your own in.

  • "We have sent each other 14,203 messages since March 2024. Split: 52/48. Nobody is winning."
  • "Our prime time is 10 p.m. The group chat is nocturnal and we have accepted it."
  • "Total words: 91,000. That is a novel. A bad one, but a novel."
  • "Most-used emoji: the crying-laughing one. Of course it is."
  • "Media sent: 3,412. Mostly photos of the dog."
  • "Messages per person: Priya 41%, Sam 33%, Jo 26%. Jo would like it noted that quality counts."

For a friend group, run one export and let each member write their own line. For a couple, the percentages are the whole post. For a creator, the busiest-hour figure is the one worth a story.

Privacy: what leaves the phone (nothing)

Parsing, statistics and PDF are all generated locally, the app works with no connection at all, and there is no account. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected. The app never talks to WhatsApp; it only reads the file WhatsApp hands you. Once you have your numbers, delete the export and the PDF and nothing remains anywhere else.

When this is not the right tool

  • You want month-by-month charts. The card is a summary, not a timeline. A graph of activity over the year has to be built elsewhere from the raw .txt.
  • You want every chat at once. The app works one export at a time, and WhatsApp exports one chat at a time.
  • You care about what is in the photos. A WhatsApp export without media does not include the media itself. Version 1.0 renders text only; rendering images from a With Media export is planned, not shipped.
  • The group is enormous. A years-old group with hundreds of members produces a very long export and PDF. The statistics still work, but give it a moment.

Quick FAQ

  • Does it work with a chat exported from Android? Yes. Both export formats are read, so a friend's export runs fine on your iPhone.
  • What does it cost? $4.99, one-time purchase, no subscription. Family Sharing is supported.
  • Does it need internet? No. It works in airplane mode, which is also the easiest way to prove to yourself that nothing is uploaded.
  • Which iPhones? iOS 15.1 or later, rated 4+, about 22.6 MB, in English plus 14 other languages. It is an iPhone app; there is a separate Android version, and the Chat Export Studio page covers both.
  • Can I get a Wrapped for exactly 2026? Only if the chat started in 2026 or you trim the .txt first. Otherwise write it as 'since the chat began' and let the date range do the talking.
